How to Stop Confusing Lookalike Kanji: 5-Second Visual Rules for Similar Characters
The JLPT loves testing lookalike characters that differ by a single radical or stroke. Learn why studying similar kanji side-by-side in Visual Families permanently eliminates confusion.
On every JLPT exam from N5 to N1, test writers design multiple-choice questions specifically to punish learners who only recognize the "general vibe" of a kanji. If you confuse 待 (Wait) with 持 (Hold), or 牛 (Cow) with 午 (Noon), you lose easy points. Here are the 5-second radical rules that make mixing them up impossible.
1. The Temple (寺) Quartet: 待 vs. 持 vs. 特 vs. 時
All four of these super-common JLPT kanjis share 寺 (Temple) on the right. Ignore the right side and lock onto the left radical:
- 待 (Wait — まつ matsu): Left radical is 彳 (Footstep / Path) → You stop your footsteps on the path to Wait outside the temple.
- 持 (Hold — もつ motsu): Left radical is 扌 (Hand) → You use your hand to Hold your items.
- 特 (Special — トク toku): Left radical is 牛 (Cow) → A temple cow is a Special sacred animal.
- 時 (Time — ジ ji / とき toki): Left radical is 日 (Sun) → Monks track Time by the position of the sun.
2. The Horn Rule: 牛 (Cow) vs. 午 (Noon) vs. 年 (Year)
Why do beginners constantly mix up 牛 (Cow) and 午 (Noon — as in 午前 AM / 午後 PM)? Because they differ by just a few millimeters of the vertical stroke!
- 牛 (Cow): The vertical stroke pokes straight through the top like a sharp bull's horn.
- 午 (Noon): The top stays flat like a roof at high noon — nothing pokes through.
- 年 (Year): Adds an extra horizontal tier for the seasons stacking up over a Year.

Common Questions Answered
How do you tell apart 待 (Wait), 持 (Hold), 特 (Special), and 時 (Time)?
All four share the right-side Temple (寺) component, so you only need to look at the left radical: 彳 (Footstep) = Wait on the path (待); 扌 (Hand) = Hold in your hand (持); 牛 (Cow) = Special prize cow (特); 日 (Sun) = Time tracked by the sun (時).
