The Earth & Ground Radical (土): 土 (Soil), 地 (Ground), 場 (Place) & 堂 (Hall)

A plant sprouting out of the flat ground line: that is 土 (Earth / Soil). Place 土 on the left or bottom of a kanji and you unlock every major Japanese word for land, locations, subways (地下鉄), and halls (食堂).

Watch out for stroke lengths: in 土 (Soil / Earth), the bottom horizontal ground line is ALWAYS longer than the top bar (the exact opposite of 士 Samurai/Scholar, who has broad shoulders on top!).

Quick Comparison: 土 (Dirt) vs. 地 (Earth) vs. 場 (Location) vs. 堂 (Hall)
